"Workflows That Benefit Both Clinical and Research Applications are Bridged by Digitization"

For the greater part of the last century pathology workflows have been well-established and essentially unchanged. Digitization of the slide workflow has altered this classic workflow but has also added unique potential paths to how the end result of pathology (i.e. diagnosis) can be accomplished.  These workflow changes and additions have the potential to transform the field of pathology into a more efficient, accurate, and multifaceted specialty.

Over the past decade, the developers of image management software (IMS), the core of any digital pathology workflow, have focused on maintaining (or facilitating) the long-established practice habits of pathologists.  However, in the near term, IMS developers have shifted their thinking toward new, and improved use cases and workflows that only the digital environment can support.  

These use cases include collaboration, real-time consultations, educational opportunities, QC and specimen pre-screening, and analysis with machine learning algorithms. 

Standardization of data and image formats will evolve leading to greater interoperability. Enabling the efficient use of this data will ultimately lead to more accurate and efficient patient care and will lead to more rapid advances in the life sciences industry.

David C. Wilbur, MD, serves as the Chief Medical Scientist and Pathologist at Corista, where he leads the company's artificial intelligence studies. His focus is on leveraging technology to enhance physician workflows and accuracy. Prior to his current role, Dr. Wilbur was the Director of the Cytopathology Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. He remains a Professor of Pathology Emeritus at Harvard Medical School and is a graduate of Johns Hopkins.

Carl Barrett, PhD, Chief Life Sciences Officer at Corista, brings over 30 years of experience in translational research and biomarker development, particularly in digital pathology. Before Corista, he led biomarker development in oncology at AstraZeneca and served as Global Head of Oncology Biomarkers at Novartis. Dr. Barrett holds a Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University. With over 600 publications, he's a recognized member of several prestigious scientific communities and serves as a distinguished professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Keith Kaplan, MD, is a seasoned pathologist with a rich academic background from Michigan State University and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He gained recognition as Resident of the Year at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he also founded the Army Telepathology Program. Dr. Kaplan has served as an Associate Professor at Mayo Clinic and is currently the Chief Medical Officer at Corista. He is an active board member of the American Pathology Foundation and has been publishing The Digital Pathology Blog since 2007.
